Manteuffel, Edwin, Freiherr von

Manteuffel, Edwin, Freiherr von ĕtˈvēn frīˈhĕr fən mänˈtoifəl [key], 1809–85, Prussian field marshal. He served in the Danish War (1864) and was appointed Prussian governor in conquered Schleswig. In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 he commanded brilliantly, and in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71) he distinguished himself. Manteuffel commanded (1871–73) the German army of occupation in France and from 1879 until his death was governor of Alsace-Lorraine.
