Buffalo City

Buffalo City, metropolitan municipality (2011 pop. 755,200), Eastern Cape prov., South Africa, on the Indian Ocean. East London is the municipal seat other communities include Mdantsane, Khambashe, Duncan City, King William's Town, Zwelitsha, and Bhisho. Named for the Buffalo River (whose mouth is at East London), it was first established as a local municipality in 2000 and became a metropolitan municipality in 2011. Automobile assembly and other industries contribute to a well-developed manufacturing sector. East London is an important port and the only river port in South Africa.
