Toungoo or Taungu both: toung´go͞o´, toung´o͞o´ [key], town, S Myanmar, on the Sittaung River. It is a railway junction. From the late 14th cent. it was the center of one of the three chief states of Myanmar in the late 16th cent., under the Bagan kings, it preceded Bago as the capital of a unified Burmese kingdom.
