Afyonkarahisar

Afyonkarahisar äfyōnˈkäˌrähĭsärˈ [key] [Turk.,=black castle of opium], city, capital of Afyonkarahisar prov., W central Turkey, at an elevation of c.3,500 ft (1,070 m). It is the commercial center of a region where grains are grown. Opium poppies, once a main product, were banned in 1971, except for some medical uses. Carpets are manufactured in the city, which is a major rail junction.
