Tamworth, city (1991 pop. 63,260) and district, Staffordshire, W central England. Its products include clothing, textiles, and aluminum ware. An amusement park and zoo are nearby. Tamworth was burned by the Danes in the 9th cent. and rebuilt by Queen Æthelflæd in the 10th cent. The Church of St. Editha, built in the 8th cent. and rebuilt in 1345, has an unusual double spiral staircase. Robert Peel, a member of Parliament for Tamworth, issued a set of principles in 1834 known as the Tamworth Manifesto. The city gives its name to a widely known hog breed.
