Christopher Reeve

Age: 52

actor who became a movie icon with the title role in 1978's Superman. Vowing to “escape the cape,” he starred in the period films The Bostonians and The Remains of the Day. A 1995 fall from a horse left Reeve paralyzed and wheelchair-bound, but he continued to work, directing In the Gloaming for HBO and performing in the 1997 remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. He was a tireless advocate for stem-cell research.
