Lauer became co-anchor of NBC's popular Today show on January 6, 1997. He had first joined the Today team in 1994, when he signed on as a news anchor. He worked for WNBC-TV in New York as co-anchor for News Channel 4/Live at Five (1993–96) and Today in New York (1992–94). He has hosted other programs in major U.S. cities. In 1998 he married model Annette Roque.
