Levi P. Morton

banker, political figure
Born: 5/16/1824
Birthplace: Shoreham, Vt.

Having built a small fortune working in a country store in Hanover, New Hampshire, he went on to become a merchant in Boston. He became a partner in a New York dry goods store in the 1850s, then went on to found banks in New York and London. He served in Congress (1878–80), and as ambassador to France (1881–85) before becoming vice president under President Benjamin Harrison (1889–93) and governor of New York (1895–97).
