Rapid City flash flood

On this date in 1972, a cloudburst in the Black Hills of South Dakota produced 14 inches of rain, causing a deadly flash flood in Rapid City. The incredible deluge caused the Canyon Lake Dam to fail, and a massive wall of water swept through Rapid City, claiming 236 lives and injuring 3,000.
