Heavy fog causes ships to collide

On this date in 1956, heavy fog blanketed the waters off Nantucket. The Andrea Doria, an Italian luxury liner sank when it was accidentally rammed by the Swedish-American liner Stockholm. The catastrophe, which resulted in the Andrea Doria's sinking, claimed 52 lives.
