200 mph winds from Hurricane Gilbert cause devastation

On this date in 1988, Hurricane Gilbert steamed into Mexico south of Brownsville, Texas. Gilbert, with the second-lowest pressure ever recorded for an Atlantic hurricane (888 mb) had already devastated Jamaica and the Yucatan Peninsula with winds approaching 200 mph, but by the time it moved inland near the U.S. border it had weakened considerably.
