"Great New England hurricane"/"Long Island express" comes in

On this date in 1938, a terrible hurricane hit Long Island and New England. Depending on where you lived, it was known as the "Great New England Hurricane" or the "Long Island Express" because the wind sounded like a freight train. An estimated 700 people died in the storm and thousands were left homeless.
