On this date in 1954, Hurricane Hazel struck Toronto, flooding streets, washing out bridges, and claiming 83 lives. The category 4 storm moved swiftly up the eastern coast of the United States before moving inland over the Carolinas. In all, the storm killed more than 400 people and caused more than $1 billion in damages.
