268 steamship passengers stranded due to high winds

On this date in 1918, the Canadian steamship Princess Sofia became stranded on Vanderbilt Reef off the coast of British Columbia in high winds. The strong northerly gale prevented rescuers from saving the 268 passengers, mostly miners from the Yukon and Alaska, and the 75 crewmen. The following day the ship sank as the weather conditions worsened and all those on board perished.
