On this date in 1947, a temperature inversion over Donora, Pennsylvania, located in the Mon Valley, finally let up after deadly smog enveloped the industrial town. The thick smog, made up of the smoke spewing from zinc mill and steel mill smokestacks, turned midday dark as night and claimed 20 lives over several days.
