Hundreds of sailors drown in Lake Erie

On this date in 1913, 270 sailors on eight cargo ships drowned in Lake Erie because of unpredicted gales. Wind gusts of 80 mph were recorded in Buffalo, N.Y., and over a foot and a half of snow, accompanied by 70 mph winds, fell on Cleveland, Ohio.
