Storm off Rhode Island claims 56 vessels

On this date in 1898, the "Portland" storm featured wind gusts of up to 98 mph off Block Island, RI. The storm, which dropped two feet of snow in some areas, sank the S.S. Portland, killing all 191 passengers. The storm claimed 56 vessels in all, killing over 450 people.
