Thrice nominated for an Academy Award, Pakula began his career as an assistant in the cartoon department of Warner Bros. His first work as a producer was Fear Strikes Out (1957). His films often focus on social injustice, intrigue, and difficult relationships. Acclaimed examples include To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Klute (1971), All the President's Men (1976), Sophie's Choice (1982), Presumed Innocent (1990), and The Pelican Brief (1993).
