Alfred Briggs IRION, Congress, LA (1833-1903)
IRION, Alfred Briggs, a Representative from Louisiana; born near Evergreen, Avoyelles Parish, La., February 18, 1833; attended the common schools, Franklin College, Opelousas, La., and was graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1855; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1857 and commenced practice in Marksville, La.; delegate to the State secession convention in 1860 and was opposed to secession; during the Civil War served in the Confederate Army, being attached to General Walkerâs division under Colonel Randall; member of the State house of representatives in 1864 and 1865; resumed the practice of his profession; editor of a local newspaper in Marksville, La., 1866-1874; moved to Evergreen, La., in 1870 and engaged in planting; continued the practice of law and also engaged in literary pursuits; member of the State constitutional convention in 1879; judge of the third circuit court of appeals of Louisiana 1880-1884; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1887); unsuccessful candidate for renomination; died in New Orleans, La., May 21, 1903; interment in the Baptist Cemetery, Evergreen, La.
