JOHNSON, Charles Fletcher, a Senator from Maine; born in Winslow, Kennebec County, Maine, February 14, 1859; attended the common schools and the Waterville Classical Institute; graduated from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1879; principal of the high school of Machias, Washington County, Maine, 1881-1886; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1886 and commenced practice in Waterville, Maine; unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Maine in 1892 and 1894; mayor of Waterville 1893; member, State house of representatives 1905, 1907; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1910 and served from March 4, 1911, until March 3, 1917; unsuccessful candidate for reelection 1916; chairman, Committee on National Banks (Sixty-third Congress), Committee on Fisheries (Sixty-fourth Congress), Committee on Pensions (Sixty-fourth Congress); judge of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the first circuit 1917-1929; died while on a visit in St. Petersburg, Fla., February 15, 1930; interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville, Maine.
