Irving McNeil IVES, Congress, NY (1896-1962)

IVES, Irving McNeil, a Senator from New York; born in Bainbridge, Chenango County, N.Y., January 24, 1896; attended the public schools; during the First World War served overseas with the United States Army 1917-1919, discharged as first lieutenant, Infantry; graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., in 1920; engaged in the banking and insurance businesses in New York 1920-1930; member, New York State assembly 1930-1946, serving as minority leader in 1935, speaker in 1936, and majority leader 1937-1946; chairman of New York State Temporary Commission Against Discrimination 1944-1945; member, board of trustees of Hamilton College and Cornell University; dean of the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations 1945-1947; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1946, reelected in 1952, and served from January 3, 1947, to January 3, 1959; was not a candidate for renomination in 1958; unsuccessful candidate for election as Governor of New York in 1954; died in Norwich, N.Y., February 24, 1962; interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, N.Y.
