McLANAHAN, James Xavier, (grandson of Andrew Gregg), a Representative from Pennsylvania; born near Greencastle, Franklin County, Pa., in 1809; was graduated from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., in 1827; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1837 and commenced practice in Chambersburg, Pa.; member of the State senate 1842-1844; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses (March 4, 1849-March 3, 1853); chairman, Committee on the Judiciary (Thirty-second Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1852; resumed the practice of law; died in New York City December 16, 1861; interment in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
