SLINGERLAND, John I., a Representative from New York; born in Jerusalem, Albany County, N.Y., March 1, 1804; attended the public schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits; member of the State assembly in 1843 and 1844; elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1849); was not a candidate for renomination in 1848; resumed agricultural pursuits; again a member of the State assembly, in 1860 and 1861; died in Slingerland, N.Y., October 26, 1861; interment in the Slingerland family mausoleum.
