TUFTS, John Quincy, a Representative from Iowa; born near Aurora, Dearborn County, Ind., July 12, 1840; moved to Iowa in 1852 with his parents, who settled in Muscatine County; attended the common schools and Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa; moved to Cedar County, Iowa, in 1858; engaged in agricultural pursuits; member of the State house of representatives in 1870, 1872, and 1874; elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1877); United States Indian agent of Indian Territory 1879-1887; moved to Los Angeles, Calif.; engaged in the real estate business; president of the Los Angeles Board of Aldermen 1892-1896; died in Los Angeles, Calif., August 10, 1908; interment in Rosedale Cemetery.
