MENZIES, John William, a Representative from Kentucky; born in Bryants Station, Bourbon County, Ky., April 12, 1819; attended the common schools and was graduated from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1840; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Covington, Ky., in 1841; member of the State house of representatives in 1848 and 1855; elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1863); resumed the practice of law in Covington; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1864; judge of the chancery court 1873-1893; again resumed the practice of law; died in Falmouth, Pendleton County, Ky., on October 3, 1897; interment in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington, Ky.
