KIRKPATRICK, Littleton, a Representative from New Jersey; born in New Brunswick, N.J., October 19, 1797; was graduated from Princeton College in 1815; studied law in Washington, D.C.; was admitted to the bar in 1821 and commenced practice in New Brunswick, N.J.; master in court chancery in 1824; surrogate of Middlesex County 1831-1836; mayor of New Brunswick in 1841 and 1842; trustee of Rutgers College 1841-1859; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1845); chairman, Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business (Twenty-eighth Congress); died in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., August 15, 1859; interment in Presbyterian Cemetery, New Brunswick, N.J.; reinterment in Van Liew Cemetery in 1921.
