LYNCH, John, a Representative from Maine; born in Portland, Maine, February 18, 1825; attended the public schools; was graduated from the Portland High School in 1842; engaged in mercantile pursuits; manager of the Portland Daily Press in 1862; member of the State house of representatives 1862-1864; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1865-March 3, 1873); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Navy (Forty-first Congress), Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury (Forty-second Congress); moved to Washington, D.C., and established the Washington Daily Union in 1877; engaged in the manufacture of bricks and drain pipes in Washington, D.C.; died while on a visit in Portland, Maine, on July 21, 1892; interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
