JONES, Nathaniel, a Representative from New York; born in Warwick, Orange County, N.Y., February 17, 1788; completed preparatory studies and later taught school; member of the State assembly in 1827 and 1828; engaged in banking in 1834; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses (March 4, 1837-March 3, 1841); moved to Newburgh, N.Y., in 1841; surveyor general of New York from February 1842 to November 1844; State canal commissioner 1844-1847; superintendent of schools and clerk of the Board of Education of Newburgh in 1851; member of the State senate in 1852 and 1853; died in Newburgh, Orange County, N.Y., July 20, 1866.
