KNIGHT, Nehemiah, (father of Nehemiah Rice Knight), a Representative from Rhode Island; born in “Knightsville,” Cranston (now a part of Providence), R.I., March 23, 1746; attended the common schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits; town clerk 1773-1800; elected to the general assembly of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in 1783 and again in 1787; sheriff of Providence County in 1787; elected as a Republican to the Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth Congresses and served from March 4, 1803, until his death in Cranston, R.I., June 13, 1808; interment in a small cemetery on Cranston Street and Phoenix Avenue in a locality known as “Knightsville,” Providence, R.I.
