TOMPKINS, Patrick Watson, a Representative from Mississippi; born in Kentucky in 1804; received a limited education; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Vicksburg, Warren County, Miss.; judge of the circuit court; elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1849); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Navy (Thirtieth Congress); moved to California during the gold rush of 1849; died in San Francisco, Calif., May 8, 1853; interment in Yerba Buena Cemetery.
