Kennedy 1969-1977; treasurer of the Democratic National Committee 1983-1985; chairman of the Democratic National Committee 1985-1989; consultant; appointed on September 24, 2009, to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Edward M. Kennedy; took the oath of office on September 25, 2009, and served until February 4, 2010.
