BOWNE, Samuel Smith, a Representative from New York; born in New Rochelle, Westchester County, N.Y., April 11, 1800; moved to Otsego County with his parents, who settled near Morris, N.Y.; attended the common schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits; moved to Laurens, Otsego County, in 1825; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1832 and commenced practice in Laurens; moved to Cooperstown, N.Y.; member of the State assembly in 1834; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843); was not a candidate for renomination in 1842; moved to Rochester, N.Y., in 1846 and continued the practice of his profession; judge of Otsego County 1851-1855; resumed the practice of law; died on his farm near Morris, Otsego County, N.Y., July 9, 1865; interment in Friends Burying Ground.
