Thomas Jefferson VAN ALSTYNE, Congress, NY (1827-1903)

VAN ALSTYNE, Thomas Jefferson, a Representative from New York; born in Richmondville, Schoharie County, N.Y., July 25, 1827; attended the common schools, Moravia (N.Y.) Academy, and Hartwick (N.Y.) Seminary, and was graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., in 1848; studied law in Albany, N.Y.; was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced practice in that city; served as judge advocate with the rank of major during the Civil War; judge of Albany County 1871-1882; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1883-March 3, 1885); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1884 to the Forty-ninth Congress; resumed the practice of law; mayor of Albany, N.Y., 1898-1900; died in Albany, N.Y., October 26, 1903; interment in the Rural Cemetery.
