HOLMES, Uriel, a Representative from Connecticut; born in East Haddam, Middlesex County, Conn., August 26, 1764; moved with his parents to Hartland, Conn.; attended the common schools and was graduated from Yale College in 1784; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1798 and commenced practice in Litchfield, Conn.; member of the State house of representatives 1803-1805; prosecuting attorney of Litchfield County 1807-1814; judge of the Litchfield County court 1814-1817; elected as a Federalist to the Fifteenth Congress and served from March 4, 1817, until his resignation in 1818; died in Canton, Conn., May 18, 1827; interment in East Cemetery, Litchfield, Conn.
