The Dawson's Creek actress who married and divorced Tom Cruise
Katie Holmes is the TV and movie star whose marriage to Tom Cruise also made her a tabloid favorite of the early 21st century. Katie Holmes first became a TV star as Josephine "Joey" Potter on the coming-of-age TV series Dawson's Creek (1998-2003, starring James Van Der Beek). She parlayed her TV fame into movie roles, graduating from schoolgirl parts in movies like The Ice Storm (1997, with Tobey Maguire) and Wonder Boys (2000, with Michael Douglas), to leading parts in Pieces of April (2003, with Patricia Clarkson and First Daughter (2004, with Michael Keaton). In 2005 she appeared in the Hollywood blockbuster Batman Begins (with Christian Bale) as well as the well-received independent comedy Thank You for Smoking (2005), and she became engaged to actor Tom Cruise after a much-publicized courtship and a proposal from Cruise at the Eiffel Tower. The press took to calling the couple "TomKat" and reported on their every move. They had a daughter, Suri, on April 18, 2006 and then were married in Italy on November 18, 2006. Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in June of 2012. Wikipedia later noted that "Following the announcement, those close to Holmes stated that she believed she had reason to fear that Cruise would abduct Suri, and also feared intimidation by the Church of Scientology." However, Holmes and Cruise were officially divorced without incident shortly thereafter. Holmes began dating actor Jamie Foxx the next year. Katie Holmes's other films include the thriller Miss Meadows (2014), the bipolar poets drama Touched with Fire (2015), Steven Soderbergh's heist caper Logan Lucky (2017) and the satiric comedy Dear Dictator (2018, with Michael Caine).
