Sky Sciences

This page provides basic information about the scientific and pseudo-scientific ways to study the sky, planets, stars, and more.

Astrology

A pseudo-science meaning “star wisdom,” astrology attempts to link human characteristics and destinies with the position of the planets. Astrologers use a horoscope chart, which literally means “hour of observation.” It is a forecast of the future based on the positions of heavenly bodies at a person's precise time of birth.

Astrometry

This branch of astronomy studies the movements and positions of celestial bodies. It is also called positional astronomy.

Astronautics

This is the science of space research.

Astronomy

Meaning “star distribution,” astronomy is the scientific study of the heavens. Astronomers study the stars, the planets, and everything else in our universe.

Astrophysics

This branch of astronomy deals with the physics and chemistry of the stars.

Cosmogony

The study of the origin as well as the development of the universe.

Cosmology

The study of the physical and philosophical principles of the universe.

Ethnoastronomy

The study of astronomical concepts and traditions across cultures.

Uranography

The science of charting the skies. (Uranos is Greek for heaven.)
