On this date in 1998, a catastrophic ice storm finally came to an end in the northeast United States and Canada. Approximately 4.5 million people lost power and millions of trees were destroyed by the thick coating of ice. It was the worst natural disaster in Canadian history. Damages exceeded $1 billion and the storm system claimed 56 lives in the United States and Canada.
