On this date in 1989, a cold snap lingered over much of the nation. Sixteen cities in the north-central United States reported record low temperatures. Morning low temperatures of 17 degrees Fahrenheit in Bismarck, North Dakota and 26 degrees Fahrenheit at Minneapolis, Minnesota, were the coldest on record for so late in the spring. It was just 43 degrees Fahrenheit at the start of the Kentucky Derby, the coldest derby day in 115 years of record-keeping.
