Birthplace: Sydney, Australia
Elle Macpherson, like so many of her supermodel colleagues, has used a successful modeling career as the foundation for expanding professional interests. The six-foot Australian was an eighteen-year-old vacationer in Aspen, Colorado, when a modeling agent noticed her. After appearances in every issue of Elle magazine for six years, as well as several stints in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue, Macpherson began taking acting roles, most notably in Sirens (1994), Jane Eyre (1996), and The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996). Other films include The Edge (1997) and With Friends Like These? (1998). In addition, Macpherson designed a lingerie line, produced fitness videos, and with supermodel colleagues, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and Claudia Schiffer, opened a chain of Fashion Cafes.
