A former window dresser at Henri Bendel, Schumacher also worked as a designer for Revlon before moving into costume design and art direction, lending these skills to Woody Allen's Sleeper (1973) and Interiors (1978). Script writing and directing for television eventually led to feature film direction. His most successful works include St. Elmo's Fire (1987), Flatliners (1991), Batman Forever (1995), Batman & Robin (1997), 8MM (1999), and Flawless (1999, writer and director), Tigerland (2000). He also directed the video Kiss from a Rose for the pop performer Seal (1994).
