Employed as a lawyer before he turned to writing, Treat wrote hundreds of short stories and 17 novels and was one of the founders of Mystery Writers of America. He received that organization's prestigious award, the Edgar, for two of his titles: H as in Homicide (1965) and Mystery Writers' Handbook (1976). His other works include D as in Dead (1940), Venus Unarmed (1961), and P as in Police (1970).
