Mariah Carey
singer, songwriter
Born: 3/27/1970
Birthplace: Long Island, New York
Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter known for her seven-octave range and her popular gospel-influenced, dance-pop songs. Her recordings include Mariah Carey (1990), Emotions (1991), the eight-million selling Music Box (1993), Daydream (1995), and Butterfly (1997). In 2001 she starred in the universally panned film Glitter. Her label dropped her in 2002 and her next two albums bombed critically and financially. But she rose again in 2005 with The Emancipation of Mimi, which became the year's bestselling album in the U.S. and the single “We Belong Together” was the biggest hit of the year. She won three Grammy awards in 2005.
