Clarence “Kelly” Johnson invented the first technologically advanced aircraft, including the United States’ first operational jet fighter, the Lockheed F-80. Johnson was born in Ishpeming, Michigan and studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Michigan. Johnson worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation where he designed or influenced dozens of aircraft.
