Bronislaw Geremek was an anti-communist political figure in Poland. Geremek was a foreign minister of Poland from 1997-2000 and later a European Parliament member. He was a key figure in negotiations to end communist rule in Poland. Geremek survived the Holocaust by escaping the Warsaw ghetto at age 11 and remaining in hiding until the end of the war. He was trained as a historian and entered politics to help bring democracy to Poland. During his political career he took part in Poland's accession to both the European Union and NATO.
