Roberts graduated summa cum laude from Harvard in 1976, and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1979. He clerked for Henry J. Friendly and William H. Rehnquist before assisting Attorney General William French Smith. Roberts served as associate counsel to President Reagan from 1982 through 1986; thereafter, he argued cases as a lawyer, both in private practice and as principal deputy solicitor general. He became a D.C. circuit judge in May 2003, and chief justice of the Supreme Court in September 2005.
