Maharishi Mahesh was both a spiritual man and an entrepeneur who promoted the joys of inner happiness. He was born as Mahesh in Jabalpur, India into a scribe caste family, and reinvented himself as a maharishi, meaning "great seer" in Hindi during the 1950s. In the 1960s, he was the spiritual guru of the Beatles, which put him on the world stage. The Maharishi started the transcendental meditation movement in 1957. He called it TM, a trademark, and it consisted of closing one's eyes twice a day for 20 minutes while repeating a mantra silently. The goal was to attain deep relaxation, clear thinking, inner fulfillment, and to eliminate stress and promote good health. TM is now a multi-billion dollar industry.
