When adopted as a child he took the name of his adoptive family. He trained in civil engineering then began working at Central Steel Company, becoming president after 17 years. He then worked at U.S. Steel as president (1938–52), chairman and CEO (1952–55), overseeing the firm's modernization and expansion.
