Paul Percy Harris

lawyer, founder of Rotary International

Birthplace: Racine, Wis.

Having grown up in Vermont and studied law in Iowa, he set up a practice in Chicago, where he founded an informal networking club. The club met in members' offices, rotating locations for each meeting, which gave rise to its name, the “Rotary club”. The idea caught on in other cities, and the National Association of Rotary Clubs was founded in 1910, ad Rotary International was founded in 1922.
