Andrea Mead Lawrence Biography

At the age of 15, Andrea Mead Lawrence placed eighth in the Giant Slalom at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Four years later, she won two gold medals—in the Giant Slalom and the Slalom—at the games in Oslo, Norway. Born in Rutland, Vermont, Lawrence's parent owned the Pico Peak ski resort and she grew up skiing at every available opportunity. Later in life, she was active in community affairs in Aspen, Colorado and Mammoth Lakes, California, and founded the Andrea Lawrence Institute for Mountains and Rivers. She died of cancer on March 30, 2009.
