Saied, Kais

Saied, Kais, 1958–, Tunisian law professor, president of Tunisia (2019–). An authority on constitutional law, he was a professor at the Univ. of Tunis (1999–2018) and has served as secretary general (1990–95) of the Tunisian Association for Constitutional Law and then as its vice president. Saied helped draft Tunisia's post-Arab Spring constitution, which was adopted in 2014. A social conservative running as an independent, he was supported by both leftists and Islamists in the 2019 elections and easily defeated businessman and media mogul Nabil Karoui in a runoff.
